The World Wide Web (WWW) or just the Web has become a
major part of our lives. It’s an information space which can hold all sorts of
data ranging from images to videos. It is the primary development tool in this
age of information. It is worth noting that the Internet is a global network of
connected computers while the web (WWW) is a multimedia library of text,
videos, graphics and other stuff for example sites like Wikipedia usually have
a compilation of all these things combined together.
Describing the internet as a brain is merely an
analogy or metaphor that we use but is it really? A comparison would explain
more. We all know that a brain has 2 hemispheres
(sides) connected by a kind of a parallel cable that goes through the middle
aka. Corpus callosum (this also
makes up the misleading claim that the right side of the brain is more creative
while the left side of the brain is more logical). Each of these 2 hemispheres
are divided into 2 more sides knows as lobes
which makes up at total of 4 lobes with each having a specific function to
perform, we won’t go into the details of each lobe. Now that we know the
structure of a brain, we have to look at how information or data passes through
the brain. The nerves in our brain carry electrical information from one part
of our brain to another or from one part of our brain to another part of your
body. The speed that it travels at depends on the health of our nerves, how
thick the nerve is and what sort of information it is carrying. Electrical
information related to muscle movement is the fastest.
Now that we know all about the brain let’s look at the
web. The first obvious requirement for a brain-like
web is that all parts of the web should be able to communicate with each other
with ease using a shared protocol. At present, when checked, everything on the
web is inter-connected with each other using a shared protocol, you use the
same browser to access different sites rather than having to switch browsers
every time you wish to access a different site. Secondly, the information on
the web should be easily accessible like in a brain which it clearly is as you
can just get something from a simple google search (even if Google dies, we have Yahoo! and Bing which are not as good but perform the same function). Thirdly,
the information should be editable just like in a brain, you don’t want to
mislabel something and then not be able to edit it. Furthermore, as technology develops
the rate at which we receive information from the internet is improving
drastically just like thicker nerves carry more information, better
infrastructure carries more information on the web (obviously we can’t improve
our nerves the same way as technology does unless it takes place due to
evolution). However, there is one major flaw in the web that the brain does not
have and that is the fact that it is not able to get information on its own or
learn anything on its own for that matter. It needs us humans to provide it
with information in order to increase its knowledge, on its own, the web is
just a platform where others can come and check out the information they need.
It cannot evolve like humans do.
The web is similar to the brain in lots of ways but it
is in no way exactly equal to the
brain. The brain is far more evolved than the web currently is. Even though
each brain deteriorates over time as the person gets older, the web itself is
stored on servers and computers which if destroyed will kill the web as well.
However, the brain is able to relearn information on its own while the web
won’t be able to do so.

The
World Wide Web is like a new planet. When you go there, you
can start fresh and do whatever or be whoever you want.
Just like the internet is
filled with unlimited information and knowledge, a new planet is filled with a
variety of unlimited resources – from unimportant to life-changing to dangerous
ones. The possibilities are simply endless.
It’s how you use these
resources that determine your future. If you choose to use the resources
foolishly you will face the consequences.
The
human brain can be compared to an alpha wolf. Just like the
human body needs a brain to function, a wolf pack needs a leader.
An alpha is needed to
tell the other wolves what to do. The alpha is not the most physically strong
member of the pack, but it controls every task the other wolves do and is
always the most protected member, just like the brain is protected by a strong
thick skull.
Without an alpha, a wolf
pack cannot exist. Without a brain, a human cannot exist.
